Our History
Explore the history of Windham Hill Inn and learn how this historic Vermont property continues to preserve its character and charm.
An Inn Steeped in History
The Windham Hill Inn began life as the Lawrence Farm in the early 1800’s. Several generations of the family lived here until the 1960’s when it was purchased by a doctor from Grace Cottage Hospital to allow his son and daughter-in-law and convert it into a boarding house. In 1982 it was renamed the Windham Hill Inn and renovated into a bed and breakfast.
In 1993, it came under new ownership once again. And transformed the buildings into what we know today. Over the next few decades, the Inn continued to grow and the restaurant became one of the best regarded in New England.
In 2021, while the Inn was closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the main house was struck by lightning and partially burned. The current ownership bought the Inn in 2022, and the barn re-opened in 2023.
Since then we have been working to rebuild the main house with the goal of continuing to make the Inn a place that is beloved by guests and employees alike.
